Sporting Superstar!

--------------------
Congratulations to our sporting superstar Lachlan, who has been selected for the Sydney Swans Academy Under 11 squad commencing in February 2015. Lachlan will begin rigorous training sessions at Newcastle University and will also go to Sydney for training at Macquarie University. In April he will get to attend a squad camp. Lachlan was the only player selected from the Newcastle City AFL club in his age group out of hundreds of players who tried out. Well done, Lachlan! An amazing achievement!

Congratulations to all our wonderful students who participated in our Athletics Carnival today! It was a terrific day, with wonderful weather to match.

Students demonstrated great athleticism and sportsmanship whilst taking part in the march past, war cries, tug of war and the track and field events. Well done everyone. Enjoy the wide variety of photos below.

Karate

Congratulations to all the students who participated in our Karate sport program this term. Sadly, Friday was our last session but it has been absolutely amazing to see the skills and techniques that students have developed over 10 weeks.

Our Karate instructor, Sensei Marc, was so impressed by our students that he decided to award scholarships worth $170 to the students who had shown the most progress and skill throughout the term. Well done to Joseph, Declan and Liam who received a certificate for training sessions at Newcastle Karate, a uniform and yellow belt.

It was very difficult for Sensei Marc to choose only a few students as there were so many who have done an amazing job this term – and are now yellow belt grade.

If you are interested in participating in Karate outside of school, a link to the Newcastle Karate website is attached below. Well done, everyone!

Zone Cross Country

----------------------

A special report from our Zone Cross Country correspondent and photographer, Nelson G-

As the grey clouds zoomed across the sky, the Zone Cross Country carnival commenced!

First there was the 8/9 girls event followed by the boys. After that there was the 10 years girl and boy race. The 11 year boys (which consisted of most of the Tighes Hill team) zoomed past the finish line. The 11 year girls had a wonderful race and scored lots of points. The 12/13 boys and girls were last for the day and also performed exceptionally well.

Everyone behaved very well, the weather held off throughout the events and everyone was really tired by the end. The day’s final score was; Kids:1, Storm:0.

Well done and thank you to Nelson for offering to report on this event for our blog and taking some fantastic photos!

Today students participated in our annual swimming carnival at Mayfield pool. A terrific day was had by all and it was great to see so many of our new students get involved and achieve fantastic results. I’m sure we’ll see many of our students heading off to Zone in the coming weeks. Well done everyone!

Oz-Tag

--------------------
Today our students went to Islington Oval to compete against Islington Public School in a game of Oz-Tag as part of our Callaghan Cluster Schools partnership.

All the training and hard work the Tighes Hill Tigers put in over the past few weeks certainly paid off as we were the victorious team today with a decisive win! Excellent sportsmanship was displayed throughout the match and a great job by Ethan C who was today’s referee. Thank you to Islington for the great match!

Sporting Triumph!

-------------------

Today our students played a hard fought game to draw in the inaugural Interschool Soccer Friendly against Islington Public School. The game was organised to assist in each school’s transition program and to develop stronger links between schools in the Callaghan cluster.

The game started strongly with Tighes Hill leading the scoring and dominating early play. Islington fought back and equalised early in the second half. Both teams battled it out until the final whistle, resulting in a one-all draw.

Referee Greg Fullford declared that the game was one of the more skilled and sportingly played that he could recall. I was so impressed with the teamwork and the camaraderie displayed by all students and it was great to see handshakes and hugs at the end of the match.

Special mention must go to the team captain Callum for his terrific sportsmanship and leadership, Mitch for being a great team player and Lachlan and Ethan for their energy and enthusiasm.

We all had such a great time and students are keen for another match soon. We look forward to organising future interschool events and thank our school communities for their support.
