Checkmate!

Congratulations to our super Chess team – Noah, Oscar, Jamie, Akira and Connor – who are through to the Finals of the Interschool Chess Challenge in Sydney next month! Today I had the pleasure of joining the boys at Coal Point PS for the Semi-Finals and they did an outstanding job representing our school and placing 3rd overall. This will be the first time a Tighes Hill team has made it to the Finals – I’m so proud of you all!

Congratulations to our year 5/6 students who accompanied me at the Interschool Chess Challenge at HSPA today. We had a very successful day of competition, placing 1st in the primary division. Well done to Connor, who was the overall winner of the competition, Jamie who placed 2nd and Akira who placed 5th. All students performed exceptionally well, demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and terrific behaviour. Our school has now earned a position in the semi-finals coming up in term 3. A big thank you to all the wonderful parents who helped make this event possible by providing transport. Have a look at our super chess stars below!

Chess Team Tournament

On Monday students from our class, 5/6D and 4S attended the 25th annual NSW Junior Chess Teams Tournament at the PCYC Broadmeadow. It was a terrific day with over 40 schools represented, 76 teams with students ranging from Yr 2 to Yr 6. I was so impressed with the way our Tighes Hill students behaved, competed and displayed sportsmanship. Congratulations to Joseph, Jack and Dan whose team placed 3rd, earning us a trophy to take back to school! Well done also to the students from Miss Drew’s and Mr Slade’s class, it was great to see so many enthusiastic chess players get involved in this event. Thank you to all the parents who helped with transport.

Chess semi-finals

Yesterday our top 5 chess players from last term were invited to participate in the Interschool Chess Challenge semi-final event at Coal Point PS. Jack, Zane, Adrian, Cala and Dan dressed to impress in their blazers and ties battled it out against some fierce competitors. We finished in 6th place overall with only a few points and half points in between the top places. Well done to the team for their great efforts today and for being excellent school representatives.

Today we went to the Hunter School of Performing Arts to participate in the Interschool Chess Challenge. We had a great day and students played valiantly against a variety of tough opponents.

Congratulations to Jack, who was awarded our top scoring player and 5th overall. The point totals were extremely close with only half a point separating the top 3 schools. Well done THPS – finishing 3rd at the end of the day!

Our top players will be invited to compete in the semi-finals in Term 3. Thank you to all the wonderful parents who provided transport today – events like this wouldn’t be possible without your help! All the photos are below and you can visit the Sydney Academy of Chess website for all today’s results.

Well done to our wonderful chess team who competed in the semi-finals of the Interschool Chess Challenge today at Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus.

Our top 5 players – Dan, Joe, Zane, Jack and Adrian were invited to represent our school in this tough competition and did a great job playing a variety of tricky opponents. Unfortunately we didn’t come away with a trophy today but our students performed tremendously. It was such a close competition – we were only a few points below the winning teams!

Results from the tournament will be available from the Sydney Academy of Chess website within the coming days. Great work, boys!

Congratulations to our students from the OC who represented our school in the Interschool Chess Challenge last Friday organised by the Sydney Academy of Chess.

It was a huge day of mental tactics, strategy and intense concentration! Many schools from across the region were represented including Plattsburg, St Phillips College, Valentine and HSPA.

The competition was extremely close throughout the day and our students showed great sportsmanship and encouragement of each other.

Overall, our team finished 2nd place, just half a point behind Plattsburg, who were the day’s winners. Congratulations also to Dan, who placed 2nd in the individual scores. Our school has made it through to the semi-finals which will be held next term.

A big thank you also to our wonderful parents who helped make this event possible by providing transport to and from the venue.
