Super Statisticians!

Earlier this term Stage 3 students took part in the Statistical Society of Australia’s National Schools Poster Competition, which involved students devising a hypothesis, creating surveys, collecting data and analysing and presenting their findings. Today we received some exciting news – 2 of our teams were joint winners!

Congratulations to Chelsea, Blade, Mika, Edie, Ellen and Sam from the Waste Watchers. Congratulations also to Liana, Raquel and Eliza from Reading Right!

A massive thank you to the amazing Dr Elena Prieto-Rodriguez for introducing this project to us and for being a fabulous mentor!

Thinkfest!

Today saw the culmination of our annual Thinkfest program! Students showcased their talents, creativity and problem-solving skills at our host school New Lambton South PS. It’s been a huge amount of work: making props, writing scripts, maintaining a visual diary, painting backdrops, having fun and making lots of mess! Our efforts were rewarded today with a win for our English team, Best Visual Diary, Highly Commended for Enthusiasm and Best Backdrop. Our History team received awards for Best Prop and Best Backdrop. Our Maths team received Best Skit Solution and Science also received Best Backdrop. Congratulations to Ember who was recognised as Best ‘Thinkfester’ for her outstanding effort, leadership and contribution to this year’s program. Well done everyone – a terrific result!

Maths Olympiads!

Congratulations to all students in the OC for their outstanding effort and hard work during the APSMO Maths Olympiads and Maths Games programs these past 2 terms. These challenging programs require a high level of application and problem solving skills and students should be very proud of their fantastic results.

Maths Games

A special mention to Liana for receiving this year’s Special Achievement/ Encouragement Award for her outstanding effort and commitment during the program, and to Noah K who received a Perfect Scorer medal for his amazing result (only 1% of the 31,388 participants achieved this!)

Statistics & Data

This term students have worked hard on a major maths project for the Statistical Society of Australia’s National Schools Poster Competition. This project involved students working in teams to create an informative poster presentation based on the collection and interpretation of data towards addressing a practical research question. Students began by brainstorming a topic of interest, then formulated a hypothesis to address. Some groups created surveys while others collected data or conducted tests. When the data collection was complete, students used Excel to analyse their data and report their findings. Well done everyone, it has been a tremendous amount of work and I’m very proud of your efforts! A special thank you to Dr Elena Prieto-Rodriguez from the University of Newcastle for being our mentor throughout the project.

Maths Enrichment

Earlier this year, many of our top Stage 2 and 3 mathematicians took part in the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians. During the Challenge, both Noah and Oscar achieved perfect scores earning High Distinctions. Last term they embarked on the next stage (Enrichment) of the program, where they worked through a series of complex multi-layered problems. Congratulations to both Noah and Oscar who received their results today – High Distinctions! Well done.

Maths Stars!

Well done to all of our Stage 3 students who took part in the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics competition last term. Students received their results at yesterday’s assembly and they performed exceptionally well!

Merits (top 45%) – Dexter, Mika, Jules, Grayson, William, Ty, Chloe & Duncan

Distinctions (top 15%) – Raquel, Hamish, Edie, Noah G, Emma, Fin, Chelsea, Ellen, Eleanor, Liana, Sam & Blade

High Distinctions (top 100 – out of 9,146 year group participants) – Celeste (70th), Amie (97th), Layla (54th), Oscar (12th) & Noah K (5th).

A special mention also to Noah K, whose amazing achievement earned him a District Prize award.

Survey time!

This term we have been working on a project for the SSA (Statistical Society of Australia) National Schools Poster Competition. Students have devised a hypothesis and started collecting data for their projects. One of our groups is investigating the reading habits of adults. It would be greatly appreciated if you could take a minute to complete their survey, as the more responses we receive, the stronger our data. All responses are completely anonymous. We would greatly appreciate your participation – our survey closes this Thursday 26/10/17 at 8pm.

Total Eclipse of the Heart

Today we were lucky enough to receive a visit from our class mathematician, Dr Jarad! He gave a wonderful Astro presentation all about explosions, lunar eclipses and solar eclipses. Thank you so much for your time, knowledge and expertise. We look forward to your visit next term.
