Today the OC received a visit from our class mathematician Dr Jarad Martin.
Dr Jarad taught our students about solving Fermi problems, named after physicist Enrico Fermi. Fermi problems are all about estimation and involve making justified guesses about quantities that seem impossible to compute given limited information.
Dr Jarad also told students about the Drake Equation which is a probabilistic argument used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. Click on the link to watch a fun animation about how the Drake Equation works.
Today we were lucky to have a visit from our class mathematician Dr Jared Martin from the CSIRO Mathematicians in Schools program. Students worked at solving a variety of challenging maths problems using different number systems and looking at binary codes. A big thank you to Dr Jared for once again sharing his time and expertise with our class.
Today we received a visit from our class mathematician Dr Jarad as part of the CSIRO Mathematicians in Schools program. Students explored a variety of challenging problem solving tasks and had an interesting discussion about Fermat’s Last Theorem. A huge thank you to Dr Jarad for visiting us and sharing his amazing knowledge with us.
Today we had our first visit from our class mathematician Dr Jarad Martin who is a Radiation Oncologist at the Mater Hospital. Dr Jarad very generously gave up some of his time today to meet and work with students on some challenging mathematical problem solving. Students explored a variety of mathematical concepts and theories such as Factorial Equations (n!) and Pythagoras Theorem and looked at the uses and importance of prime numbers.
Heather, Mitch, Liam and Callum with Dr Jarad
The OC would like to thank Dr Jarad for joining us today and sharing his amazing mathematical skills and knowledge. We look forward to working with him next term.
