Special Delivery!

Today we got a lovely surprise when our Year 6 graduation shirts arrived. Students were quick to try on their new attire and they look terrific! Well done to Zander, who had his design chosen for the back of our shirts.

Newcastle Writers Festival

Today the OC enjoyed a day out at this year’s Newcastle Writers Festival. Our day began at the Civic Theatre Playhouse where we were treated to a session presented by hilarious audiobook narrator, Stig Wemyss. Well done to Calvin for his bravery taking part in the ‘chubby bubby’ marshmallow challenge! Next we headed into City Hall to meet one of our favourite writers, Michael Gerard Bauer, the author of our current class novel- Don’t Call Me Ishmael. It was great to listen to his talk about his childhood and the moments that inspired him to become a writer. After lunch we took part in some writing workshops. Our year 6 students worked with local author and poet Deborah Kelly and learnt about Haiku poetry and enjoyed a Japanese afternoon tea. Our year 5 students took part in the Sense-ational writing workshop with author and teacher Paul Russell where we did lots of creative activities to help inspire story starters using the senses such as smell, touch and sound. Students were even lucky enough to receive a signed copy of his book The Isle of Antu. Well done, OC, for your great effort, enthusiasm and behaviour today!

Happy Easter!

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Thursday for our annual Easter Hat Parade and celebrations. It was fantastic to see so many OC students wearing a creative Easter hat. Thank you to everyone who supported our school, donating eggs and buying tickets in our raffle. We raised over $800 which will go towards supporting the numerous creative and performing arts programs we offer. Congratulations to Ember who was our lucky winner of the best hat with her very stylish Easter Fascinator. Thank you to Mrs Bowman for all the photos!

Harmony Day Celebrations

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Harmony Day. We had a wonderful day focusing on this year’s theme: our diversity is our strength. Students took part in a range of cultural activities throughout the day which begun with our Year 6s helping students from each class to create a mandala using recycled bottle tops on the bottom court. Thank you to Jane for organising and leading this activity – the finished mandala looked fantastic! Our Year 5s worked with their kinder buddies to make worry dolls. All students contributed to this year’s whole school art project – a giant koinobori fish – by painting and sharing their handprint and all students created their own totem which will be made into a whole school totem display. Thanks to the canteen for their terrific effort making over 400 lunches today! We raised over $250 in donations which will go towards our World Vision sponsor student Subrata Das from Bangladesh. Our student performances were excellent. Thanks to our wonderful music teacher Miss Hibbert for organising this year’s performance items. Have a look at the great photos from Mrs Bowman below!

Athletics Carnival

Well done to everyone for their fantastic participation and effort today at our annual Athletics Carnival! Despite the dismal weather we managed to get through the majority of events with lots of smiles and sportsmanship. Have a look at some of the photos below!

What a lovely surprise I received yesterday morning! Thank you to the OC for organising a surprise party for my birthday. We certainly had a fun day eating party food and making a huge mess in our room!
