Harmony Day!

Glitter Words

Yesterday our school celebrated Harmony Day. Our Stage 3 students set up a variety of art/craft stations for our younger students to participate in. These included origami, badge making, poster designs, paper chains and story time with Uncle Dan! It was great to see our students make a huge effort and share their enthusiasm with others.

All of our students contributed to our combined Harmony Day artwork – a large timber map of Australia with all THPS students and staff represented with mini pictures. A big thank you especially to Sarah and helpers for their efforts painting and assisting me with this activity. It will be displayed in our stairwell once complete.
After the BYO picnic lunch, students took to the stage to perform their Harmony Day song – Say G’day (video below). Thank you to Mr Haug for his time, effort and organisation of all the performances. They were terrific! Be sure to check out the photos and video below.

Last Friday our SRC organised their first fundraising event for the year to support and raise money for Camp Quality. Students dressed in mufti, enjoyed a pizza lunch and talent quest. Well done and thank you to our students for their effort and help setting up. Special mentions to Dan, for being our enthusiastic TQ host; Joe for being one of our super TQ judges and to Max and Joseph for being terrific stage hands. It was a fantastic event and we raised over $800 to donate to Camp Quality. Thanks to everyone for supporting this event.

Newcastle Writers Festival

Today the OC headed off to the Writers Festival at the Newcastle Regional Library. Students began by participating in a workshop with author Kaz Delaney, where they looked at techniques for creating exciting beginnings and endings for stories. We enjoyed lunch in Civic Park and then returned for an author talk by illustrator and musician Matt Ottley. Zane was lucky enough to have an abstract portrait drawn by Matt! See the photos below.

Tune into NBN news tonight to see us in action at the Writers Festival!

There are still lots more programs on offer at the Writers Festival this week, including a family fun day on Saturday for anyone interested.

Sport Stars!

Congratulations to Lachlan and Adrian for their performances at the Zone AFL and Soccer trials. Adrian was successful in being selected to play in the Newcastle Zone Soccer team. Lachlan moved on from the Zone trials and was further selected to represent the Hunter Region in the State AFL Championships next month. Two amazing performances from two amazing sports stars. Well done boys!!

Mathemagician!

Today the OC had a visit from our Mathematicians in Schools (MiS) partner, Dr Jarad Martin. Dr Jarad, a doctor from the Calvary Mater hospital, visits our class each term to share his knowledge and expertise in mathematics with our students. Today, we looked at different types of numbers, famous mathematicians and theories. Well done to our students for their participation and to Jarad for donating his time to us. We look forward to seeing him next term.

A Tasty Transition

Today Year 6 and I had a terrific time attending Taster lessons at Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus. We participated in several sessions including art, metal work, science and hospitality. Students also enjoyed a free sausage sizzle lunch! Well done to our students, who participated enthusiastically (lots of positive feedback from the high school teachers) and displayed exemplary behaviour throughout the day. Lots of great photos below!

Students/families interested in obtaining a placement in the 2016 High Achievers class need to return their applications to me by the end of next week.
