Well done to our Rock Band – Max, Joseph, Adrian and Liam – who performed 2 songs yesterday. Click to watch the videos below.

OC Book Club

Well done to the students who came to our final Book Club for 2014. We discussed the classic – A Wrinkle in Time – with some very mixed reviews from students. It was interesting to compare how literature for young people has evolved from the 60s to today.

A big thank you to all the students who took part in Book Club this year. We will start fresh with some new novels in 2015!

Year 6 Farewell

Glitter Words

Thank you to all the students who came along to our Year 6 Farewell last week. We all had a great time and I was so impressed with the excellent behaviour, dancing and flashmob performance! Below are some photos, including the ones from the photo booth.  If you would like a copy of these or the final PowerPoint presentation, please bring in a USB next week and I’ll copy them on for you. Also, if anybody managed to film the flashmob, I’d love a copy.

A few final thanks – to Miss Staniland for her baking efforts creating a magnificent cake (what am I going to do without you next year???); to the wonderful people from Islington Baptist Church for allowing us to use your hall and equipment; to all the staff for their attendance and help; Mrs West for her amazing work organising our flashmob; Miss Beker for her help setting up the hall; and to all the wonderful parents for your lovely comments and feedback and great support.

Christmas Carols

Glitter Words

Thanks to everyone who attended our Christmas Carols night on Wednesday. Below are some of the photos taken during the event.

Just a reminder that Tuesday is our class party day and Secret Santa. Students may bring in a small plate of food or drink to share. For Secret Santa, students may bring in a gift (max. $5 value).

Hour of Code

On Monday the OC received a special visit from our favourite computer science guru, Dr Elena Prieto, from the University of Newcastle. Dr Elena joined us to take part in the Hour of Code, a global movement aimed at reaching tens of millions of students to introduce them to computer programming and encourage them to learn how to code. We had a great time completing a variety of online tutorials (there’s even a Frozen one!) and thank Dr Elena for sharing her time with us. So far, over 57, 530, 240 people have tried an Hour of Code, including President Barack Obama! Well done to the OC for taking part.

Reading Extravaganza!

Yesterday our class was joined by students from Islington Public School and students from the University of Newcastle to take part in the Aim High Careers Through Reading program.

Students participated in a variety of reading activities using different texts and enjoyed working with the students from Islington. A huge thank you to Matt Lumb and the students from the Uni for their enthusiasm, time and organisation of this fantastic opportunity. Thank you for the lovely book gift – Hope – which all students received a copy to take home.
