The Fall
Well done to all the students who read The Fall by Tristan Bancks in preparation for our excursion to the Writer’s Festival tomorrow. We held our Book Club today and it was great to hear so many great ideas and opinions about the plot, characters and the ending. Just a reminder that students can bring money tomorrow if they wish to purchase books from the Festival or they may bring copies of Tristan’s books to be signed.
Our next book for the month of April is The Blue Cat by Ursula Dubosarsky, which has also been selected for the CBCA 2018 Shortlist. I look forward to hearing what students think about it next term. Happy reading!

Newcastle Writers Festival
Today the OC enjoyed a day out at this year’s Newcastle Writers Festival. Our day began at the Civic Theatre Playhouse where we were treated to a session presented by hilarious audiobook narrator, Stig Wemyss. Well done to Calvin for his bravery taking part in the ‘chubby bubby’ marshmallow challenge! Next we headed into City Hall to meet one of our favourite writers, Michael Gerard Bauer, the author of our current class novel- Don’t Call Me Ishmael. It was great to listen to his talk about his childhood and the moments that inspired him to become a writer. After lunch we took part in some writing workshops. Our year 6 students worked with local author and poet Deborah Kelly and learnt about Haiku poetry and enjoyed a Japanese afternoon tea. Our year 5 students took part in the Sense-ational writing workshop with author and teacher Paul Russell where we did lots of creative activities to help inspire story starters using the senses such as smell, touch and sound. Students were even lucky enough to receive a signed copy of his book The Isle of Antu. Well done, OC, for your great effort, enthusiasm and behaviour today!
Newcastle Writers Festival
Today the OC headed off to the Writers Festival at the Newcastle Regional Library. Students began by participating in a workshop with author Kaz Delaney, where they looked at techniques for creating exciting beginnings and endings for stories. We enjoyed lunch in Civic Park and then returned for an author talk by illustrator and musician Matt Ottley. Zane was lucky enough to have an abstract portrait drawn by Matt! See the photos below.
Tune into NBN news tonight to see us in action at the Writers Festival!
There are still lots more programs on offer at the Writers Festival this week, including a family fun day on Saturday for anyone interested.
