Dr Jarad!

A huge thank you to Dr Jarad who paid our class a special visit this week. We worked on some challenging maths problems together and contemplated the size and diameter of the world.

MCYA Stars!

Well done to all our clever mathematicians who took part in the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians at the end of last term. The program provided students with a series of problems to work through and allowed them to collaborate and discuss strategies in small groups.  Congratulations on your effort and hard work completing this challenging challenge! Our super achievements are below:

Proficiency – Zali, Annabelle, Callum & Rowan

Distinctions – Will, Fin, Julian, Archie, Amie, Ellen, Hamish, Oliver, Norah, Hamish, Kynan, Raquel & Emma.

A special mention also to Emma and Raquel who achieved a perfect score!

Choose Maths

Earlier this term, students in the OC worked on a film project for this year’s Choose Maths competition. The project involved creating a short 3-5 minute film based on the  theme ‘Our World Needs Maths’. Films had to explore this concept and include a mathematical operation/problem and mathematical language. Have a look at their fantastic efforts below!

The Amazing Oliver!

Congratulations to our super KenKen puzzle master, Oliver!

This term in the OC we have been enjoying working on KenKen puzzles (part sudoku, part magic square, part problem solving, totally challenging) as part of our maths homework options.

Last week we found out that KenKen run a challenge twice a term for schools on their blog. We eagerly awaited for the puzzle to be posted at midday and began trying to solve it. The first class to correctly solve the puzzle and email in a screenshot of their work would win a prize pack. We were thrilled to discover that Oliver was the first to correctly solve the challenging puzzle! He will be receiving his prize pack shortly. Well done!

Welcome back Dr Jarad!

Today we received a special visit from our class mathematician, Dr Jarad Martin. As part of the Mathematicians in Schools program, Jarad has been visiting the OC for many years now, sharing his knowledge, expertise and insight of how maths can be applied in a variety of fields and careers. For our first visit of 2018, Jarad took students through a range of problems, focusing on different problem solving strategies and techniques. We look forward to more visits throughout the year and thank Jarad for sharing his time, enthusiasm and expertise with us.

World Maths Day!

On Wednesday we had lots of fun taking part in the International World Maths Day competition.  The competition measured speed in arithmetic and numeracy skills on the Live Mathletics platform over a 48 hour period and was open to all schools around the world. The best part was challenging each other – with several students very pleased at beating the teacher! Well done, OC!

We also helped support UNICEF by earning points by answering questions correctly. These points are then into cash and donated to fund UNICEF supported schools in Zimbabwe, bringing education to children in need. What a great reason to be involved!
